Signs You’re High-Functioning With Anxious Attachment at Work

Signs You’re High-Functioning With Anxious…

You’re not “too sensitive.” You’re a high performer with a nervous system on overdrive.

On the surface, you look like the dream colleague: reliable, responsive, emotionally aware.
Underneath, your nervous system is constantly scanning for threat.

Here are subtle signs you may be high-functioning with anxious attachment at work:

  • You re-read emails before sending them, not for typos, but to make sure “no one will be upset.”
  • A short or delayed reply from a manager can derail your focus for hours.
  • You say yes when you’re already at capacity, then resent yourself later.
  • You spend more energy managing how you’re perceived than claiming what you need.
  • You feel physically unsettled until you get confirmation that “everything’s okay.”
  • Feedback, even neutral, lands as proof that you’re not good enough.
  • You over-explain, over-prepare, and over-deliver to feel “safe” in your role.

It looks like dedication.
It feels like hyper-vigilance.

This isn’t about drama or collapse.
It’s about a nervous system that learned: “Connection is fragile. I need to work for it.”

Awareness is not about blaming yourself.
It’s about finally naming the pattern so you can work with your system, not against it.

If you recognise yourself here, you’re not alone and you’re not broken.
You’ve just been trying to feel safe in an environment that keeps rewarding your anxiety as “excellence.”
